Title: Russian Attacks Leave 850,000 Without Power in Eastern Ukraine
Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine — A Russian assault on energy infrastructure left approximately 850,000 people in eastern Ukraine without electricity on Sunday, according to reports from local energy providers.
The majority of the outages occurred in the Dnipropetrovsk region, where over 600,000 residents in areas such as Pavlohrad, Samarivskyi, Kamianske, and the city of Dnipro experienced disruptions. The energy company DTEK confirmed the attacks in a post on Telegram, noting that repair efforts were hindered by ongoing strikes.
Simultaneously, another 250,000 residents in the Kharkiv region also faced power losses due to a strike on local infrastructure. Mykola Baksheyev, the mayor of Zlatopil, reported that no casualties resulted from the attacks, but highlighted that power engineers were working tirelessly to restore electricity, although the timeline for repairs remained uncertain.
This recent wave of attacks follows a significant aerial assault on energy facilities that occurred the previous day, which forced residents in five regions into darkness and disrupted electricity transmission in Kyiv. With the onset of winter, Ukraine anticipates further challenges as Russia increases its bombardments on energy networks.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the intensified strikes, asserting they aim to pressure Ukraine during trilateral talks brokered by the United States, set to take place in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday and Wednesday.
In response, Russia’s Ministry of Defence announced via Telegram that its forces would continue targeting fuel and energy infrastructure, claiming these sites support the Ukrainian military’s operations.
