Lagos Governor Inspects Vandalized Bridge on Lagos-Badagry Expressway
LAGOS—Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu conducted an inspection on Saturday of a vandalized section of a bridge along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway at Vin-Niger in the Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area. He assured residents that the structural integrity of the facility remains un compromised despite the damage.
During the assessment, Sanwo-Olu confirmed that ongoing construction work on the bridge is unaffected. He reported that vandals had excavated parts of the structure and removed essential fittings meant to secure the bridge.
Condemning the act as an unacceptable assault on public infrastructure, Sanwo-Olu vowed that the government would take action to identify and prosecute those responsible, including anyone involved in the theft or sale of public materials.
“The law will take its course against anyone found culpable, regardless of their social status,” Sanwo-Olu stated.
The governor expressed alarm over the ongoing destruction of government infrastructure, particularly given the significant investments made by his administration in the construction and maintenance of roads and public facilities statewide. He also noted similar vandalism incidents in Festac Town, where drainage slabs and iron rods had been removed along Second and Seventh Avenues.
Sanwo-Olu urged residents to play a more active role in safeguarding public assets by reporting suspicious activities to security agencies. “When you see something, you should say something. The government cannot be present at all times. Residents have a shared responsibility to protect their community,” he said.
He commended the Lagos State Police Command, the Rapid Response Squad, the Lagos State Neighbourhood Watch, and the Kick Against Indiscipline initiative for their prompt response to the incident.
The inspection is part of broader efforts by Sanwo-Olu’s administration to restore order along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, enhance safety, and improve the overall condition of the area. During engagements with community members in Alaba Rago and Orile, he noted significant progress in efforts to clear, reorganize, and improve the corridor.
Sanwo-Olu reassured motorists, commuters, traders, and other road users that the government remains committed to protecting public facilities and implementing safety and accessibility measures along the route. He also pledged ongoing collaboration with security agencies to combat vandalism and maintain a safer environment across Lagos State.
