SEC names Georgia nominees for McWhorter Award

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (April 14, 2023) – Jack Podlesny of the Georgia football team and Callie Dickinson of the Bulldogs’ women’s swimming and diving team have been nominated for the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship by the University of Georgia.

The H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship has been presented by the Southeastern Conference since 1986 to the league’s top male and female scholar-athletes.

The Southeastern Conference will name the 2023 recipients of the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship on May 2.

Highlights of Georgia’s nominees include:

ATHLETE SPORT MAJOR
 Jack Podlesny,  Georgia Swimming & Diving  Environmental Health,
Public Health
  • One of the National Football Foundation’s newest Hampshire Honor Society members
  • Earned his Bachelor’s degree in the Fall of 2021
  • Working on his Master’s of Public Health degree
  • College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team, 2022
  • Cum Laude graduate • Started his Bulldog career by drilling a game-winning 53-yard field goal in the final seconds of the 2021 Peach Bowl 
  • Completed his career by scoring 11 points in Georgia’s second straight national championship victory in January.
  • 2022 SEC Special Teams Player of the Year
  • Owns the school record for points scored in a season with 151
  • Ranks second in career field goal percentage at 82.4 percent
  • Tallied the fifth-most points in a career of any Bulldog with 365

  • Graduated Summa Cum Laude in May 2022
  • President of UGA chapter of Blue Key Honor Society
  • Member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society
  • Recipient of 2021 Michael E. Penland Family Research Award from UGA Kinesiology department
  • Earned six CSCAA All-America citations in career, including first individual honor this season in 200-yard butterfly.
  • Qualified for NCAA Championships in all five seasons, posting career-best finish of 16th in 200-yard butterfly at 2023 meet.
  • Five-time SEC medalist, including 2023 silver medalist in 200-yard butterfly.
  • Ranks top-10 in school history in four events.
  • Tallied 19 career event wins in dual meets.

The SEC provides the league’s male and female McWhorter Scholar-Athlete of the Year Post-Graduate Scholarship recipients with a $20,000 post-graduate scholarship. The 26 remaining male and female finalists for the award will also receive a $10,000 post-graduate scholarship.

The award recipients are chosen by a committee of Faculty Athletics Representatives from the 14 SEC institutions and are announced in May, as well as honored by the league membership at SEC Spring Meetings in Destin, Fla.

Last year’s McWhorter Award recipients were Mississippi State football student-athlete Austin Williams and Lisa Gunnarsson of the LSU women’s track & field team.
