‘Seismic shift’: World reacts to US midterm election results | US Midterm Elections 2026 News

Democrats Gain Control of Congress Amid Discontent Over Trump Policies

In a significant outcome from the recent midterm elections, Democrats have regained control of both chambers of Congress, posing a formidable challenge to President Donald Trump and the Republican Party. This shift is drawing attention from international leaders, who are assessing how these changes in Washington may influence U.S. foreign policy on a range of issues, including relations with Iran, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, and trade agreements.

Trump has acknowledged that the U.S.-Israel conflict regarding Iran likely had an impact on his party’s election performance. He remarked that voters may have been unprepared for the immediate effects of rising gasoline prices during the electoral process.

Reactions from world leaders highlight the global implications of the election results:

Iran

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, speaker of Iran’s parliament and chief negotiator in U.S.-Iran talks, stated that the election results indicate a rejection of conflict. “Americans said NO TO WAR, and we endorse this message,” Ghalibaf posted on X. He warned that any betrayal of public sentiment by the U.S. government would have severe repercussions.

Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei added that changes in U.S. political parties would not alter its “hostility” towards Iran. “Those who hope for a change in U.S. behavior through political shifts are gravely mistaken,” he said.

Israel

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a close ally of Trump, has not yet commented on the election results. Opponent Yair Golan remarked that the outcome reflects the declining popularity of Netanyahu among both U.S. Republicans and Democrats. He cautioned that Netanyahu’s continued governance could lead Israel toward international sanctions and greater isolation.

Yair Lapid, another opposition leader, expressed that the election results diminish any chance for a unity government under Netanyahu.

European Union

European Parliament Vice President Christel Schaldemose expressed cautious optimism about the implications of the U.S. elections for Europe, suggesting they could positively impact support for Ukraine and other global relationships. However, she emphasized that the EU must remain self-sufficient and robust.

United Kingdom

U.K. Health Minister James Frith affirmed that British-American relations would withstand the political changes in the U.S., asserting that the alliance remains strong regardless of domestic shifts in power.

France

French Finance Minister Roland Lescure indicated that the French government would monitor any potential changes in Trump’s foreign policy approach in light of the election results.

Spain

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez characterized the Democratic victory as indicative of a global decline in far-right politics, suggesting similar outcomes may occur soon in Spain. He noted that U.S. voters have rejected policies that exacerbate inequality and hate.

Greece

Greek government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis assured that the U.S.-Greece relationship would not be impacted. “The United States is our strategic ally, and this will continue for major projects and agreements,” he stated.

Russia

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov released a statement indicating a wait-and-see approach regarding the implications of the election results but highlighted the historically negative stance of U.S. Democrats toward Moscow.

China

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning affirmed the importance of maintaining a constructive strategic relationship with the U.S., emphasizing that U.S. elections are an internal matter.

Japan

Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara reaffirmed the significance of the Japan-U.S. alliance amidst a tumultuous international landscape, stating it remains central to Japan’s foreign and security policy.

South Africa

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa described the election as ushering in “a new era in world relations,” reflecting on the Democrats’ control of Congress as a response from the American populace.
