‘Shut your mouth’: Tennis feud erupts on court

Maria Sakkari and Danielle Collins engaged in an unexpected verbal spat during the Greek player’s straight sets, 6-4 6-2, win over the American in the second round at the Canadian Open.

Usually arguments in tennis ensue after a point’s finished but this time it occurred before the point even began.

The incident happened midway through the second set, when Sakkari hit a ball into the crowd in frustration after serving a fault.

She raised her hand to apologise but her opponent was having none of it.

So much so, Collins protested from the other side of the net to the chair umpire.

“Did you just see that? Did you see what happened?” she asked.

Sakkari jumped in to defend herself saying: “It didn’t even hit anyone. I was on the ground”.

“Shut your mouth. Shut your mouth,” Collins fired back.

Sakkari:”What is your problem? I didn’t hit anyone. I framed the ball and it-” she responded.

“You hit the ball into the stands, Maria. You almost hit someone,” Collins fired again.

“I didn’t hit anyone! What is your problem? I framed the ball,” said Sakkari.

The umpire had to calm the players down before the world No.8 continued her dominance to score the win.

Sakkari will face Canadian Leylah Fernandez in the third round.
