Simi dragged online after TikToker Mirabel admits faking rape claim

Nigerian Singer Simi Faces Criticism Following False Rape Allegation
Nigerian singer Simi has drawn significant criticism on social media after a TikTok user, known as Mirabel, admitted that her widely publicized allegation of rape was unfounded.
The controversy ignited on February 18, when a TikTok video featuring Mirabel claimed that she had experienced a rape and a physical assault involving a blade in her home. The video quickly gained traction, prompting widespread outrage and emotional responses from viewers across social media platforms.
Initially, many Nigerians supported Mirabel’s claims, condemning the supposed act. However, as discrepancies in her story emerged, skepticism grew, with some users accusing her of seeking attention and dividing public opinion.
In response to the unfolding situation, Simi addressed the issue of rape culture on social media platform X, calling for men to hold their peers accountable and questioning societal reactions to accusations of sexual violence. Her statements, however, prompted backlash from critics who contended that she was dismissing the problem of false rape accusations.
The situation escalated when an older tweet from Simi, misconstrued by some as sexual innuendo, was resurfaced. As public discontent mounted, a fabricated apology purportedly from Simi circulated online, mocking her.
Social media users also bestowed the nickname “Ikorodu Celine Dion” upon her.
In a personal statement, Simi maintained her position on the prevalence of sexual violence against women, emphasizing that false allegations should not hinder genuine victims from speaking out. “Almost every woman I know personally has been sexually assaulted at some point in their lives,” she wrote. She called for accountability for those who lie while emphasizing the gravity of the issue at hand. “Women are terrified to go out. Women in their homes are not safe either,” she said, concluding with a direct appeal: “STOP RAPING WOMEN!!”
The narrative took another turn when controversial activist VeryDarkMan revealed that he had spoken with Mirabel, who confessed that her rape claim was untrue. According to him, she also stated she had created a fraudulent TikTok account to send messages to herself. VeryDarkMan described her as feeling lost and helpless, detailing that she is an 18-year-old orphan struggling with alcohol and codeine addiction, and has engaged in self-harm.
He urged the public to show compassion, highlighting the reality of mental health challenges and announced plans for Mirabel to enter a rehabilitation center.
In light of these developments, the case has been referred to authorities in Ogun State for further investigation. The incident continues to elicit strong reactions online, reigniting discussions about the complexities of sexual violence, the ramifications of false allegations, and the mental health issues intertwined with viral social media incidents.
