Site workers, residents escape death as three buildings collapse in Abia

Building Collapse in Umuahia Sparks Safety Concerns
Umuahia, Nigeria – A one-story building under construction collapsed early Friday on Finbars Road, prompting concerns among residents. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported in the incident, which occurred following heavy rain.
The building had been flagged as illegal two months prior by the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA), which had also warned the owner about structural issues that posed a risk of collapse.
At the time of the incident, site workers were not present, averting a potential tragedy. Kingsley Agomoh, General Manager of the UCDA, confirmed that officials took immediate action to seal off the site after the collapse. He reiterated that the property owner had been advised to halt construction due to the identified defects.
In addition to the Finbars Road incident, an abandoned three-story building at Road 2 Junction in the Low Cost Housing Estate also collapsed on Friday. This event follows a similar incident that occurred in July 2025 when another three-story building in the same location fell down.
A separate incident was reported in Ikwuano Local Government Area, where a two-story building under construction collapsed due to suspected use of substandard materials. No casualties were associated with this collapse as well.
After inspecting the collapsed structures, Agomoh urged property owners and developers to secure development approvals and conduct thorough soil and structural assessments before beginning any construction projects.
