Sowore blasts Nigerians celebrating IBB at 85 years

Sowore Criticizes Birthday Celebrations for IBB

The presidential candidate for the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, expressed his disapproval of Nigerians celebrating the 85th birthday of former Military Head of State General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (retd.) on social media late Monday.

Sowore, in a post on his verified X account, suggested that while Babangida has reached an advanced age, his legacy is not one to be celebrated. He claimed that Nigeria’s current struggles are partly a consequence of Babangida’s “wickedness and selfishness” during his time in power.

According to Sowore, Babangida’s tenure, which lasted from 1985 until 1993, is marked by decisions that he argues exacerbated corruption and undermined democratic processes in the country. Sowore stated, “Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, the man who did Nigeria dirty, is being celebrated by his cronies on his 85th birthday. He lived long but is no longer living well; but had he not been so wicked and selfish in the exercise of power, Nigeria would not be where it is today.”

He emphasized that history should reflect not only on the anniversary celebrations but also on the impact of Babangida’s choices during his leadership.

Babangida is known for his controversial decision to annul the widely accepted June 12, 1993, presidential election, which was believed to have been won by MKO Abiola.
