Sowore Vows to Continue Activism from Detention
Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has pledged to maintain his activism while detained at the Kuje Correctional Centre. This statement follows a ruling by the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday, which remanded him in custody until Wednesday.
The court’s order, issued by Justice Mohammed Umar, stems from the revocation of Sowore’s bail last week. The decision was made after Justice Umar dismissed Sowore’s request for the judge to recuse himself from the case, which includes allegations from the Department of State Services about remarks in which Sowore reportedly referred to President Bola Tinubu as a criminal.
Despite the ruling, Sowore remained resolute. “I’m going to prison to keep mobilizing our people,” he stated. He reported that the prosecution emphasized the need for his transfer to Kuje Prison until the specified date. “I came prepared. I even brought my prison bag. All these are happening for a good reason. Somebody must make sacrifices that will benefit this country,” he added.
Sowore explained that his recent absence from court, which prompted the bail revocation, was due to legal consultations. His new lead counsel, Olumide-Fusika, SAN, had formally informed the court of Sowore’s activities.
“I need hardly say that I am the least bothered by this development. Imprisonment has never defeated a just cause, and it never will,” Sowore concluded.
