‘Stop xenophobia or else’ – Fani-Kayode warns South Africa
Nigeria’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Femi Fani-Kayode, has issued a strong condemnation of the recent violence against Nigerian citizens in South Africa. He called for an immediate cessation of what he described as a “disturbing trend” of xenophobic attacks.
Fani-Kayode expressed that Nigeria’s patience is diminishing in light of the ongoing assaults on its nationals. His remarks followed the recent killings of two Nigerian citizens, bishop Michael Taiwo Fakunle and James Uchechukwu Nwankwo, in Johannesburg.
Reports indicate that Bishop Fakunle was fatally shot in his home in Kensington on September 4. A day later, Nwankwo was killed during an incident involving officers from the South African Police Service.
The Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa reported that Fakunle was shot multiple times after two suspects allegedly entered his residence. Fani-Kayode described the bishop’s murder as both “mortifying and deeply shocking,” noting that Fakunle had reportedly received threats prior to the attack.
He further expressed his dismay regarding Nwankwo’s death, referring to it as “another tragic loss” inflicted by police officers in Johannesburg on September 5.
