Afrobeats musician Davido has highlighted the longstanding tradition of overseas education within his family, dating back to his grandfather’s generation. In a recent interview that gained traction on social media, the award-winning artist discussed how his grandfather prioritized international education, particularly in the United States, for his children.
“My grandfather was a senator, and most of his children were sent to America for their education,” Davido stated, noting that his father attended university in Kentucky. He emphasized that this commitment to studying abroad has been a prevailing culture in his family for decades.
Davido remarked that the practice is common among many affluent African families, suggesting that the trend of pursuing education internationally has persisted through generations.
The singer further elaborated on his multicultural background, revealing that his parents first met in London. His mother hails from Edo State, while his father is of Yoruba descent, with Igbo ancestry from his grandmother. He added that his mother later moved to the United States to earn a master’s degree, further solidifying the family’s ties to America.
Reflecting on his upbringing in both Nigeria and the United States, Davido indicated that this exposure significantly shaped his worldview and contributed to his personal development and international music career. He credited his experiences with helping him cultivate a global perspective, which he believes has been instrumental in his success on the world stage.
