Switzerland Tops Group B with Late Surge Against Bosnia and Herzegovina
Los Angeles—In a thrilling Group B matchup of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Switzerland secured a decisive 4-1 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina at the Los Angeles Stadium on Thursday. All five goals were scored in the final 30 minutes of the match, dramatically shifting the momentum as the clock wound down.
Johan Manzambi, who entered the game in the 71st minute, notched two late goals after Ruben Vargas and Granit Xhaka had already put Switzerland ahead. The match took a notable turn when Bosnian defender Tarik Muharemovic was sent off in the 80th minute for a foul on Breel Embolo, which denied an obvious goalscoring opportunity.
Switzerland’s performance, characterized by a late-game offensive burst, allowed them to dominate the group with one win and one draw, following a surprising 1-1 tie against Qatar in their opening match.
The Balkan team, which now has only one point, must adopt a more aggressive strategy in their upcoming match against Qatar to keep their hopes of advancing alive. Bosnian substitute Ermin Mahmic provided a moment of consolation, scoring with a powerful volley during second-half stoppage time.
Despite a compact defensive approach, Bosnia struggled against Switzerland’s late-game pressure. The match statistics revealed that all five goals conceded by Bosnia came after the 70th minute, including the equalizer in their tournament-opening draw against Canada.
The game ignited when Vargas, taking advantage of a defensive misstep, delivered an outswinging cross to Manzambi, who responded with a powerful side volley for his first goal. Shortly thereafter, Muharemovic’s red card sealed Bosnia’s fate, allowing Vargas to score from close range and Manzambi to add another in the 90th minute. Xhaka capped the scoring with a penalty in stoppage time, ensuring Switzerland’s top position in Group B.
The tension builds as Qatar and Canada prepare to face off later in Vancouver, knowing that a win could put them level on points with Switzerland, which seeks to progress to the knockout stage for the fourth consecutive World Cup.
