Taraba steps up Ebola surveillance, plans airport fever screening

Taraba State Enhances Disease Surveillance Following Ebola Report in Abuja
JALINGO, Nigeria — The Taraba State government has heightened its disease surveillance efforts in response to reports of an Ebola case identified in Abuja. Plans are underway to implement fever screening at the state’s airport.
Dr. Bordiya Gbansheya Buma, the State Commissioner for Health, revealed these measures during a press briefing on Monday. He emphasized the importance of strengthening preparedness to prevent the possible spread of the disease.
“The government is collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Health, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), and other relevant authorities to improve disease surveillance and prepare healthcare facilities for any potential cases,” Buma stated.
Healthcare facilities, both public and private, have been instructed to remain vigilant and report any suspected Ebola cases immediately to the Ministry of Health.
Additionally, the commissioner announced plans to train healthcare workers and launch public awareness campaigns aimed at educating residents about the symptoms, transmission, and prevention of Ebola.
Residents are advised to look out for symptoms including fever, severe weakness, headache, vomiting, and diarrhea. Buma urged anyone experiencing these symptoms, especially after possible exposure, to seek medical attention without delay.
Ebola is transmitted through direct contact with the blood or other body fluids of an infected individual displaying symptoms. To mitigate risk, Buma urged residents to maintain proper hand hygiene, avoid contact with the body fluids of suspected patients, and promptly report any suspected cases or possible exposure to health authorities.
The commissioner also cautioned the public against the spread of rumors and misinformation, as well as the stigmatization of individuals who may be suspected of having the disease. He called for public cooperation with health officials, particularly during contact-tracing efforts, to effectively contain any potential outbreak.
Buma reassured residents of the state government’s preparedness in managing the situation and urged calm and vigilance, advising adherence to official health advisories.
For health information or to report suspected cases, residents can contact the NCDC toll-free line at 6232, which is available 24 hours a day.
