Taraba varsity non-academic staff issue 14-day ultimatum, threaten indefinite strike

Non-academic staff at Taraba State University in Jalingo have issued a warning of a total and indefinite strike if the state government does not implement the Consolidated Non-Teaching Tools Allowance (CONTTA) within the next 14 days.

This announcement was made in a communiqué released following an emergency congress meeting of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Taraba State University branch, on Thursday.

In the statement, the association expressed frustration over the state government’s ongoing delay in fulfilling its commitment to implement the CONTTA, despite multiple committee meetings and prior assurances. SSANU highlighted that its members had shown considerable patience while awaiting the government’s adherence to the agreement established with the federal government, but noted that this patience has not resulted in any positive outcomes.

The union’s ultimatum calls for the immediate implementation of the allowance to prevent a complete and indefinite strike. In its communiqué, SSANU referenced the successful implementation of similar agreements at other state-owned universities, such as Adamawa State University in Mubi, Sa’adu Zungur University in Bauchi, Gombe State University, Nasarawa State University in Keffi, Kwara State University in Malete, Ekiti State University in Ado-Ekiti, and Osun State University in Osogbo.

The ultimatum was officially signed by Bitrus Joseph Ajibauka, chairperson of the SSANU Taraba State University branch, and Offen Stephen Noseh, the branch secretary.
