Lagos State Government Arrests Three for Illegal Waste Dumping
LAGOS, Nigeria — The Lagos State Government has apprehended three individuals for illegal waste dumping in the Ketu-Alapere area as part of its ongoing efforts to address environmental violations. The arrests were announced Sunday by Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources.
According to the commissioner, the operation was conducted by the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) Waste Infractions Surveillance and Investigation Team during an overnight watch from May 8 to May 9, 2026. The team identified the suspects engaging in unlawful disposal of waste in prohibited areas.
Wahab stated that the individuals were later traced to their residences to investigate the reasons behind their actions. The findings revealed that the suspects lacked proper waste storage facilities and had not registered their properties with designated Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators.
In the official statement, Wahab said, “All documented properties have been forwarded to the LAWMA legal department for further legal action. Additionally, all identified blackspots have been effectively mitigated.”
The government continues to emphasize its commitment to eradicating illegal waste dumping to protect the environment and promote public health.
