Nigerian Singer Peter Okoye Reflects on Difficult Personal Time

LAGOS, Nigeria — Peter Okoye, a member of the now-defunct musical duo P-Square, recently opened up about a challenging period in his life during a video posted on Instagram. The 41-year-old singer became emotional while discussing the pregnancy of his then-girlfriend, Lola, when he was 27.

In the video, Okoye explained that he chose to announce the pregnancy himself to prevent the news from being leaked by someone else. He recalled that he made this announcement during the Soundcity Awards, shortly after he and his group received an award.

“When I was 27 years old, my girlfriend Lola became pregnant. I didn’t want the news to break from someone else, so I decided to announce it myself,” Okoye said.

He continued, stating that he dedicated the award to God, their fans, and to Lola as the mother of his unborn child. However, he claimed this decision led to tension within the group. “Immediately after that, Jude and Paul walked out, saying my announcement would ruin our career,” he said. Okoye alleged that his bandmates pressured Lola to consider abortion and accused her of using the pregnancy to manipulate him.
