Things have never been easy – Papa Ajasco opens up on struggles after fame

Nigerian Actor Abiodun Ayoyinka Discusses Challenges of Fame

Veteran Nigerian actor Abiodun Ayoyinka has opened up about the difficulties he faces despite his fame as the beloved character Papa Ajasco from the long-running television series “Papa Ajasco & Company.”

In a recent interview with media personality Lucky Udu, Ayoyinka explained that the trademark ownership of the character significantly restricts his professional opportunities. The character is registered to Wale Adenuga Productions, limiting Ayoyinka’s ability to utilize the persona for personal projects or commercial activities.

Ayoyinka noted that this restriction has hindered his participation in advertisements and brand campaigns, despite demand from companies keen on featuring him in his iconic costume. “The major problem is that particular character has been registered by Wale Adenuga. Anyone who wants me outside of that context wants me with the character, but it has never been easy for me,” he said.

He further clarified that he does not hold exclusive rights to the name or costume of Papa Ajasco. “I don’t have the right. I can’t use the name Papa Ajasco unless I seek permission. I can’t even wear the costume,” he explained. The strong public association with the character has created barriers for him to secure roles that reflect his true identity.

“Because that character is very strong, they want to see me as Papa, dress like Papa, look like Papa. It is always difficult for me to do it,” he added.

Ayoyinka also shared his previous experience working with the Lagos State Government in the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture before his retirement five years ago. While he has enjoyed a lengthy career, he described recent years as challenging.

“Things have never been okay for years now. I retired five years ago, and it has never been easy for me to move around and connect with people,” he stated. “I’m always thinking every day. Look at my home—I don’t have my own house. I don’t have a car.”

Ayoyinka is best known for his portrayal of Papa Ajasco, a role that made the character a cornerstone of Nigerian television comedy. The series has cemented its place as one of the most popular television shows in Nigeria.
