Thousands gather in Kano for Qadiriyya Maukibi festival

Thousands of followers of the Qadiriyya Islamic order from Nigeria and various other countries have convened in Kano for the 76th annual Maukibi, also referred to as the Waliyyai Festival.
The Maukibi is a significant religious procession organized by members of the Qadiriyya order in Kano. The event commenced at the Qadiriyya House in Kabara, with attendees marching to the Wali Maigiginya Cemetery along Katsina Road, where the main gathering took place.
Sheikh Qaribullahi Nasiru-Kabara, the leader of the Qadiriyya order in West Africa, led the procession.
In preparation for the influx of participants and visitors, the Kano State Police Command implemented security measures aimed at ensuring the event proceeds without incident.
CSP Abdullahi Haruna-Kiyawa, the command’s spokesperson, urged attendees to adhere to legal guidelines and maintain Kano’s reputation for hospitality. He cautioned against any behavior that might disrupt the festivities.
“The Command sternly warns against immoral behaviors such as wielding dangerous weapons, engaging in illicit drug activities, and other actions that deviate from the state’s cultural heritage,” Kiyawa stated.
Given the expected turnout from both domestic and international visitors, he emphasized the importance of remained peaceful and law-abiding during the festivities. The public was also encouraged to report any emergencies or suspicious activities to the police.
