Three killed, four injured as shopping complex collapses in Osun

Three people are confirmed dead, and four others sustained serious injuries following the collapse of a multi-storey shopping complex in Owode-Ede, located in the Ede North Local Government Area of Osun State.
The incident occurred around 11 p.m. on Friday, trapping seven artisans who were working at the construction site beneath the rubble. The victims, identified as apprentice tilers, had traveled from Ejigbo, Osun State, to work on the building and had chosen to sleep at the site, planning to resume their work the next morning.
Witnesses reported that the structure collapsed unexpectedly while the workers were resting. At the time of the incident, their supervisor was not present at the site. Concerns have been raised about the building’s structural integrity, as sources indicated that it was already in poor condition before the collapse.
The shopping complex featured 12 shops on the second and third floors, with an additional two stores in the basement. Reports suggest that the construction was carried out without proper engineering oversight, with the building’s owner allegedly supervising the project personally. The owner, who resides behind the shopping complex, is also said to have been responsible for procuring the materials used in the construction.
A video taken during the incident showed the site reduced to rubble, with debris scattered across the area as rescue efforts continued. Emergency responders, including officers from the Federal Fire Service, were present to assist in rescuing the trapped workers and providing medical attention to the injured.
As of the latest updates, three victims have been confirmed dead, while the conditions of the injured individuals vary. The cause of the building’s collapse remains under investigation, and authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident. Further details about the identities of the victims and the status of the survivors are still pending.
