Three Years After Israel’s Assault on Gaza: A Human Toll in Numbers
GAZA CITY — It has been three years since Israel initiated its military campaign against the Palestinian territories, following a deadly attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023, which claimed 1,139 lives in southern Israel and resulted in approximately 240 captives. In response, Israel launched an extensive air bombardment and intensified a blockade that had already lasted 16 years.
A ceasefire was announced on October 10, 2025; however, reports indicate that violence and casualties have persisted.
Human Cost of Conflict
The Israeli military actions have resulted in the deaths of at least 74,000 Palestinians, including over 21,000 children. This equates to approximately 3% of Gaza’s pre-war population, meaning that one in every 30 residents has lost their life due to the violence. The Palestinian Ministry of Health records only death tolls from hospitals or those officially registered, suggesting the actual count may be significantly higher, as many victims remain unaccounted for under rubble or as missing persons.
Injuries and Healthcare Strain
More than 175,000 Palestinians have been injured during the three-year conflict, translating to approximately one in 13 people in Gaza. The World Health Organization estimates that nearly 24% of these injuries are severe and likely to require long-term rehabilitation, with children comprising a quarter of that group. Gaza’s healthcare infrastructure is severely strained, with remaining facilities operating on limited supplies.
Ceasefire Violations
Since the ceasefire began in October 2025, Israel has reportedly violated this agreement with ongoing attacks, resulting in over 1,000 additional fatalities. An analysis by Al Jazeera found that attacks on Gaza occurred on 325 days out of the past 361, indicating that only 36 days passed without reported incidents of violence. Despite ongoing hostilities, U.S. officials have maintained that the ceasefire remains intact.
Continued Violence
Since the ceasefire implementation, at least 1,460 Palestinians have been killed and 5,116 injured, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
Healthcare Infrastructure Devastation
The conflict’s impact on healthcare has been catastrophic, with 94% of Gaza’s hospitals and clinics either partially or fully out of service. Only 42 out of 666 healthcare facilities are currently operational, as reported by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. International laws prohibit attacks on medical facilities, classifying such actions as war crimes under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.
Water Insecurity Crisis
Israeli strikes have also severely damaged Gaza’s water infrastructure, leading to 91% of households facing water insecurity. Many residents now rely on less than six liters of water a day, making access to clean drinking water a dire issue, as the emergency minimum for survival is considered to be 20 liters.
Widespread Displacement and Destruction
The destruction in Gaza has led to the loss of almost 82% of all structures. Approximately 1.98 million Palestinians have been displaced, constituting about 90% of the population. Satellite images reveal a landscape decimated by conflict, affecting neighborhoods and residential areas.
Education System at Risk
The education sector has also suffered extensively, with 93% of schools requiring complete reconstruction. Over 700,000 students are currently without access to formal education, and many university buildings are being repurposed to house displaced families.
Threats to Journalists
Gaza has become increasingly perilous for journalists, with nearly 300 media workers killed since October 7, 2023, including 12 staff members from Al Jazeera. Restrictions imposed by Israel have limited foreign media presence in the region, further complicating efforts to gather and report accurate information on the unfolding situation.
As the conflict continues, the humanitarian cost remains profoundly high, with civilian lives at stake across many fronts in Gaza.
