Tszyu welcomes fresh challenge from unbeaten US star

Tim Tszyu has welcomed the challenge of undefeated American star Vergil Ortiz Jr, declaring he is “always keen” to face fresh opponents.

The 25-year-old, who is signed to the legendary Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions, returned to the ring on Sunday (AEDT) and produced a first-round stoppage win over Frederick Lawson.

Ortiz had spent 18 months away from boxing due to a number of health issues, but his return could put him back in the mix for a shot at Tszyu’s WBO super-welterweight world title.

With a record of 20-0 inside the ropes and every victory coming via knockout or TKO, Ortiz has been labelled as “the best fighter on the planet” by his promoter, and after moving up from welterweight now finds himself on a collision course with Australia’s superstar.

Speaking to reporters post-fight, Ortiz admitted he would be keen to take on Tszyu and even managed to remain respectful in the process.

“There’s a lot of fighters that I want to fight and I know people would love people to see this fight,” he said.

“Tim Tszyu, with all respect, I would love to fight you. I think you’re a hell of a fighter, let’s make it happen. I want to fight the best.

“This is a sport where we want to prove we’re the best, the strongest … That’s what fighters are supposed to do.

”I don’t fear anyone. I’ll fight anyone, anywhere, anytime. If we have to go to Australia, I’m down.”

Tszyu (24-0) has torn through the Australian scene and proven to be just as damaging against international opponents, but has long spoken of his desire to fight top names in the United States.

A potential showdown with Ortiz could be one option for the 29-year-old, who took to social media to respond to the American.

Tszyu’s promoter and former NRL cult hero George Rose also welcomed the challenge from Ortiz.

De La Hoya, who had a storied career as a fighter before turning his attention to promotion, said he would begin looking into negotiating a bout with Tszyu for 2024.

“I’ve got to do my homework and see who Tim’s promoter is, see what the situation is,” he said.

“I think Vergil, right now, is the best fighter on the planet … at 154, at any weight class. I strongly feel everyone is going to be searching for Vergil – and guess what? He’s right here.

“Ortiz will even go to Australia and do it. To be world champion, you travel the world.”

Tszyu was elevated to full champion status in September and successfully defended his title in October, defeating Brian Mendoza via unanimous decision on the Gold Coast.
