UK Medic Infected With Ebola Flown to London

A British medical worker who contracted Ebola while engaged in containment efforts in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has been evacuated to the United Kingdom for specialized treatment. The UK government confirmed on Thursday that the unnamed medic tested positive for the virus and is currently receiving care at the Royal Free Hospital in London.

In an official statement, government representatives noted that the British national was returned to the UK for medical assistance following the positive test result. The Royal Free Hospital is equipped with a high-level isolation unit designed to manage patients with highly infectious diseases, ensuring that strict measures are in place to prevent any contact with the general public.

The facility has a specifically designated isolation unit, along with stringent protocols to minimize the risk of virus transmission. Renu Bindra, Deputy Director of the All Hazards Public Health Response Team at the UK Health Security Agency, addressed public concerns, stating that “the risk to the wider public remains low.”

This evacuation occurs amid a significant Ebola outbreak in Africa, which has resulted in over 5,300 fatalities. The Democratic Republic of Congo has reported the majority of these cases, according to the continent’s leading health agency.

In recent developments, Nigeria also registered an Ebola case last month involving a 42-year-old Swiss woman, whose husband is an employee at the Swiss embassy. She was subsequently transported to Geneva for treatment.
