‘Unbelievable’: Min Woo Lee excels to land first title

Min Woo Lee has been crowned the winner of the Australian PGA Championship after a comfortable victory at Royal Queensland.

The 25-year-old started day four with a three-shot lead, and managed to hold off challenges from Rikuya Hoshina and Marc Leishman.

Lee won by three shots with 20-under par to finish the tournament.

The victory is Lee’s first Australian PGA Championship title, his second on the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia and third on the DP World Tour.

After putting in on the final hole to finish with a 3-under par round of 68, Lee described the win as “unbelievable”.

“I’ve always thought I could win, it took a while to get over the hump but two wins in the last month or so, I’m really proud of my team and myself,” he said on Nine’s coverage.

The 25-year-old had to bounce back from an early bogey on day four but always had confidence in his ability, having recently won the SJM Macao Open on the Asian Tour in October.

“I made it interesting early on and through the middle but ended up holding on, I’m really proud,” he said.

“… Rikuya is a really good player and he just kept knocking on the door. It was exactly the same as my last win, the playing partner just kept coming so I knew I just needed to keep playing well and do my thing, I’m really proud of the way I played.”

Lee’s best moment came on the par-5 ninth hole when he chipped in for eagle, bringing a raucous reaction from the crowd and the man himself.

“I think that was probably the best atmosphere shot I’ve ever hit, I’ve had a few chip ins but at that point it was getting close,” he said.

“I was in a pretty average position off the tee shots … to chip that in was amazing, I want to see it straight away, it was one of the best shots I’ve probably hit.”
