US govt nabs two Nigerians for illegal voting

The U.S. Department of Justice has arrested two Nigerian nationals in connection with illegal voting practices, including unauthorized voter registration and false claims of American citizenship related to federal elections.

The arrests were announced in a statement on Monday as part of the DOJ’s ongoing efforts to address election-related crimes. The individuals arrested are Mohammed Omar Hassan, 61, and Michael Agah, 74.

Hassan has been charged in the Southern District of Texas with voting as a non-citizen. He allegedly participated in the 2022 and 2024 elections while being a lawful permanent resident. Agah faces charges in the Western District of North Carolina for similar offenses, including voting as a non-citizen and asserting false claims of U.S. citizenship to cast his vote.

The DOJ reported that Agah submitted a false claim on an Authorization to Vote Form and voted in a federal election on November 5, 2024.

Attorney General Todd Blanche commented on the arrests, noting that they represent a significant increase in efforts to combat voter fraud since the return of former President Donald Trump to office.
