‘Use 18 hours to fear women’ — Poco Lee opens up after release from UK detention
Nigerian dancer Poco Lee spoke out for the first time after his recent release from detention in the United Kingdom. He maintains his innocence regarding the allegations that led to his detention and addressed men’s attitudes towards women during a video call with social media activist VeryDarkMan, known as VDM.
In the call, Poco Lee expressed gratitude for the support he received during the ordeal, stating, “I was being myself, God sees my heart, my only worries out there was my people.” He emphasized that he would have accepted responsibility if he had committed any wrongdoing but insisted that he did not.
“If I were to say I did what someone alleges, I would say, ‘I’m suffering for my sins,’ but since I did nothing, my mind is as pure,” he said.
Poco Lee thanked fellow artists Burna Boy and Rahman Jago for their support during his difficult time, highlighting the importance of their solidarity. “Nobody would probably want to attach themselves to something like this, but for Burna Boy and Rahman Jago to stand with me means a lot,” he noted.
Reflecting on public reactions to his situation, he remarked on the mixed responses he received, saying, “Imagine waking up to texts like, ‘You’re the only one in this world, why are you always happy?’ It feels like some are just happy that something has happened.”
Poco Lee also advised men to exercise caution in their interactions with women, suggesting they should spend substantial time considering potential consequences. “Use 18 hours to fear women,” he commented.
The dancer was detained in the UK on allegations related to sexual offences but has since been released.
