Oyo State Leaders Mourn the Passing of Chief Lekan Alabi
OYO, Nigeria — Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Sharafadeen Alli, the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial candidate, expressed their condolences on Saturday following the death of Chief Lekan Alabi, a prominent figure in the state.
Alabi, who served as Chief Press Secretary to three governors, passed away in the early hours of Saturday at the age of 76. He held the title of Abese Olubadan of Ibadanland at the time of his death.
Governor Makinde issued a statement through his Special Adviser on Media, Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, describing Alabi as one of the finest indigenes of Oyo State. He noted that the elder statesman’s passing represents a significant loss for the Nigerian community.
“His voice carried the weight of truth, his counsel was sought by leaders across generations, and his commitment to the preservation of Yoruba culture and values was unwavering,” Makinde stated. “Oyo State has lost one of its finest sons.”
In a separate tribute, APC candidate Alli characterized Alabi’s death as a monumental loss, extending beyond Ibadanland to the entire state. He emphasized the enduring impact of Alabi’s legacy on future generations.
“His passing is a painful and irreplaceable loss,” Alli said. “Ibadanland has lost a custodian of its history and values, while the journalism profession has lost one of its finest voices and most experienced practitioners.”
