We will block financial networks funding terrorism – Army, ICPC
The Nigerian Army and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) have announced plans to enhance their collaboration aimed at identifying and dismantling financial networks that support terrorism and other criminal activities in Nigeria.
This initiative was highlighted during a recent courtesy visit by Brigadier General Adamu Abdul, Commander of the Nigerian Army’s 23 Armoured Brigade, to the ICPC Adamawa State Command. Abdul emphasized that targeting the financial underpinnings of terrorist organizations is essential to undermining their capabilities and disrupting their operations.
“Financial loopholes and clandestine channels that fund criminal and terrorist activities must be identified and effectively blocked,” Abdul stated.
The Army commander noted the ICPC’s critical role in this effort, particularly through intelligence gathering, financial investigations, and information sharing with security agencies. He articulated that strategies to combat terrorism must extend beyond attacking fighters and their operational networks to also encompass the financial avenues that allow them to obtain logistics and sustain their activities.
“The Nigerian Army is eager to build a stronger and more structured partnership with the Commission in these critical areas,” Abdul added. He referenced threats from groups such as Boko Haram, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), and kidnapping, highlighting the need for increased attention to the financial and logistical networks that underpin these security challenges.
In response, Okoro Ulu James, the Resident Anti-Corruption Commissioner, affirmed the ICPC’s readiness to collaborate with the military on related issues. He noted that the two institutions have a history of cooperation in personnel training and information sharing.
James stressed that closer collaboration between anti-corruption and security agencies is increasingly vital to addressing Nigeria’s security and governance challenges. He assured the Army of the ICPC’s commitment to supporting initiatives that address financial and intelligence matters which could impede efforts against terrorism and other criminal activities.
