West Indies Sets Record Run Chase, Beats India in Third ODI

Chandigarh, India — West Indies captain Shai Hope’s remarkable unbeaten 162 propelled his team to a record run chase, leading them to a five-wicket victory over India in the third One-Day International (ODI) on Saturday. The West Indies successfully chased down a target of 352 runs, achieving a final score of 352 for 5 with 10 balls remaining.

India had posted a competitive total of 351 for 7, bolstered by Lokesh Rahul’s impressive 129 not out. Although India had already secured the three-match series with victories in Thiruvananthapuram and Guwahati, West Indies demonstrated resilience, marking their first win against India since 2023.

Hope seized the opportunity to open the batting after Jewel Andrew sustained a finger injury and was taken to the hospital. Demonstrating exceptional skill despite the high humidity, Hope scored his second consecutive century of the series. He expressed a desire to continue playing despite experiencing discomfort in his groin toward the end of his innings.

“I felt something around the groin area but wanted to fight through till the end,” Hope said after the match. His innings included 17 boundaries and three sixes off 143 balls.

Amir Jangoo contributed significantly with 67 runs from 56 balls, while Keemo Paul added 44 off 35. Hope and Jangoo combined for a vital 109-run partnership for the second wicket, effectively neutralizing an Indian bowling attack that featured Mohammed Siraj and debutant pacer Anshul Kamboj, who failed to take a wicket.

Jangoo’s dismissal in the 21st over brought Sherfane Rutherford to the crease. Rutherford’s 24 runs helped maintain the momentum as Hope reached milestones of 50 off 46 balls and 100 off 104 deliveries in what marks his 21st ODI century, with five of those against India.

Paul’s innings was characterized by a brisk pace, featuring five boundaries in his knock. After Paul was caught off Gurnoor Brar in the 41st over, Hope shifted gears, scoring 62 runs off the final 39 balls faced, leading his side to victory.

In a twist of circumstances, India faced a slow over-rate penalty in the closing overs, leaving them one fielder short inside the circle. Hope and Gudakesh Motie, who scored 19 not out, capitalized on this, adding 62 runs off just 29 balls for the sixth wicket.

Earlier, India won the toss and elected to bat but faced early setbacks as captain Shubman Gill was dismissed for just 1 run, followed by Virat Kohli’s golden duck, both at the hands of Jayden Seales. A slow start saw only 28 runs scored in the first 10 overs, but Rohit Sharma, with a score of 92 off 85 balls, along with Rahul led India to a formidable total.

Sharma’s innings included a 137-run partnership with Ruturaj Gaikwad, who contributed 57 runs. Rahul’s explosive innings, featuring six sixes and 10 fours, helped him reach 129 not out from 87 balls.

The two teams will regroup for a five-match Twenty20 series beginning Tuesday in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.
