‘Why funding mass marriages is government responsibility’ – Gumi
Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has called on governments in states governed by Shariah law to allocate public funds to support marriage arrangements.
In a post on his Facebook page Thursday, Gumi argued that it is the government’s responsibility to address social needs stemming from the prohibition of sexual relationships outside of marriage in such societies.
He emphasized that government intervention to assist those unable to afford marriages aligns with principles of good governance, particularly in contexts where prostitution, fornication, adultery, and promiscuity are illegal both religiously and through state laws.
Gumi suggested that public resources could be used to help young individuals in urgent need of marriage, as well as women who face challenges in finding suitable spouses.
“In a Shariah law-driven state, where prostitution, fornication, adultery, and promiscuity are prohibited by both divine and state laws, using public funds to facilitate marriage for women who exceed the available pool of eligible men, or for any young person in dire need of marriage, is a legitimate and responsible component of good governance,” he stated.
