Why I stopped attending church — Comedian AY

Comedian Ayo Makun Discusses Reasons for Stepping Back from Church Attendance

Ayo Makun, the stand-up comedian, actor, and filmmaker known as AY, shared his decision to stop attending church in a recent social media broadcast. He clarified that his choice was not a reflection of a lost faith but rather a response to the public scrutiny he faced following his divorce.

In the Sunday video, AY stated that he still engages in online worship but opted to distance himself from church gatherings to avoid becoming a topic of gossip. “For some time now, I stopped attending church not because I stopped believing in God or lost my faith,” he said. “I was navigating a very personal season; the negative narrative put out on the blogs against me.”

He recounted his brief return to a different church, which was ultimately followed by disappointment when he was removed from a scheduled program due to concerns about public perception. This experience led him to reflect on the church’s role and purpose.

“Shouldn’t the church be the safest place to find truth, grace, and restoration?” AY asked. “If people cannot run to God’s house when life becomes heavy on them, where are they meant to run to? The clueless people who just post negative comments on social media or judge you without knowing the root of whatever happened?”

AY stressed the importance of the church being a sanctuary for grace and restoration, rather than a venue for judgment and condemnation.
