Woman allegedly spikes her former colleague?s drink and steals from him

A Kenyan woman was arraigned at the Makadara Law Courts on Tuesday, for allegedly spiking her former colleague?s drink with a stupefying substance before stealing from him. 

The accused, Millicent Wanjiru was charged with theft contrary to section 268 as read with section 275 of the penal code.

She has also been charged with handling stolen goods contrary to section 322 (1) of the penal code.

Ms Wajiru is accused of stealing electronics, household items, an ATM card and cash Sh5000 all valued at Sh76,000 from Jackson Imbwaka from his house in Githurai 44 in Nairobi on January 18, 2023.

In the second count, she has been charged with dishonestly retaining a laptop with a charger, two mobile phones and a watch knowing or having reasons to believe them to be stolen goods, in the course of stealing them.

Mr Imbwaka had invited the accused to his house for drinks and a meal after she called in the morning requesting a meeting. The two had worked together at a community based organization until 2020.

At some point, Mr Imbwaka left the house to purchase more beer and food. When he returned he suddenly fell asleep in the afternoon. He woke up early the next day and found the door to his house wide open.

Upon checking around, he found the said items and cash missing. Upon replacing his SIM card, he found that Sh9,500 had been withdrawn from his M-Pesa account.

He reported the matter to the police and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) traced the suspect to her house in Kahawa West where she was arrested and some of the stolen items recovered.

Ms Wanjiru denied the charges before Principal Magistrate Hellen Okwani of Makadara Law Courts and was released on a bond of Sh200,000 without option of a cash bail. 

The matter will be mentioned on April 11, 2023 before hearing starts on August 9, 2023.
