Former France international Emmanuel Petit has offered insights into the distinct roles of Argentina captain Lionel Messi and Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo.

Petit asserts that Argentine players are more inclined to play for Messi, while Portuguese players do not similarly rally around Ronaldo. “Argentina’s players play for Messi,” he stated. “The Portuguese players, they don’t play for Cristiano Ronaldo. This is, for me, the main difference.”

He further emphasized that the onus lies with Portugal’s manager, Roberto Martinez, to navigate Ronaldo’s situation in relation to his teammates.

During a recent episode of the How To Win The World Cup podcast on talkSPORT, Petit discussed these differences in team dynamics.

As of now in the ongoing FIFA World Cup tournament, Messi has scored three goals, while Ronaldo has yet to find the net.
