World Cup: ‘He looks sluggish, off the pace’ – Craig Burley questions Neymar’s ability

Neymar’s Return Raises Questions Ahead of Knockout Stage
Former Chelsea player Craig Burley has expressed concerns about Neymar Jr.’s ability to impact the Brazilian national team following his substitution appearance in Brazil’s 3-0 victory over Scotland on June 24.
Neymar’s career has been marred by numerous injuries, a factor that both fans and analysts have frequently lamented. Despite being recognized as one of the finest players of his generation, his ongoing injury struggles have led many to believe he has not fully realized his potential.
In the 76th minute of the match against Scotland, Neymar replaced Matheus Cunha, marking his first appearance for the Seleção since October 2023. The 34-year-old forward, Brazil’s all-time leading goalscorer with 79 goals in 129 matches, received a warm reception from the crowd at Miami Stadium.
While his return has excited many fans, doubts linger regarding his effectiveness. Burley, speaking on ESPN, addressed these concerns.
“When Neymar entered the game, there was considerable excitement among the crowd, both in the stadium and back in Brazil,” he said. “However, for players like João Pedro or others who were left out of the squad, you might think this is merely a sentimental choice.”
Burley further pointed out Neymar’s performance, noting, “I understand he hasn’t had much playing time, but he appeared quite sluggish and out of sync. If Brazil needs to rely on him in the later stages of the tournament, can he genuinely come on and make a difference against stronger opponents? He even had difficulty against Scotland.”
With seven points earned in the group stage, Brazil has successfully advanced to the knockout phase as the leaders of Group C, surpassing Morocco on goal difference.
