Activist Calls for Boycott of Tyla Concert in Lagos
Martins Vincent Otse, a social media activist known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has urged the organizers of South African singer Tyla’s upcoming concert in Lagos to cancel the event. In a video posted on his official Facebook page Thursday, VDM expressed concerns over ongoing xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in South Africa.
He emphasized that Tyla should not profit from a country where, according to him, there is a history of disdain towards its citizens. “There will be no Tyla concert in Nigeria. It is not happening,” he stated. VDM called the concert a disrespectful endeavor, especially while a Nigerian, Chidinma Adetshina, is facing deportation proceedings in South Africa.
VDS added, “Now you want to bring in Tyla and sell tickets so that she will make money off Nigerians. The same Nigerians that some South Africans hate so much. This is a warning to you: if you go ahead with that show, we will come to the venue and we will bring the show down.”
The call to boycott the concert follows Tyla’s management announcing her world tour schedule, which includes a performance in Lagos on December 22, 2026. Reports indicate that several Nigerians are advocating for a total boycott in response to the incidents of violence against Nigerians abroad.
