LAGOS, Nigeria — Nollywood actor Ugo Nwokolo has ignited a debate following his assertion that internet fraud, commonly known as Yahoo, has helped sustain Nigeria’s economy in light of the country’s ongoing financial challenges.

In a recent video discussion, Nwokolo highlighted the increasing cost of living and escalating housing expenses that have made survival difficult for many civil servants on fixed salaries. He stated that employees earning between 50,000 and 90,000 Nigerian naira monthly struggle to cover rent costs, which can reach millions of naira in major cities like Abuja and Lagos.

“Do you expect a civil servant to afford house rent of 3 million or 5 million naira in Abuja?” he asked during the conversation.

Nwokolo further questioned how low-income earners can manage rising expenses, including clothing, noting that it seems only affluent individuals, including those engaged in fraudulent activities, can afford such costs.

“In Lagos, the minimum for a two-bedroom apartment is about 7 million or 8 million naira. Who is supposed to afford it? The civil servants? Of course, it’s the fraudsters,” he remarked.

While Nwokolo clarified that his aim was not to endorse illegal activities, he argued that internet fraud has inadvertently contributed to economic activity, given that many Nigerians face significant financial struggles.

“I’m not justifying crime, but yes, Yahoo is helping the economy. How do you expect people to live in this kind of economy?” he stated.
