Yola Electricity Distribution Company Condemns Office Assault in Borno State

YOLA, Nigeria — The management of Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) condemned a recent attack on its personnel and office located in Biu Local Government Area, Borno State.

In a statement released Tuesday by Communications Officer Blessing Tunoh, YEDC described the incident as “unacceptable,” emphasizing that assaults on staff members performing their duties will not be tolerated.

The statement detailed that a group of individuals forcibly entered the Biu office, assaulting employees, damaging property, and setting company vehicles on fire. Several operational assets, including service cables, meters, computers, refrigerators, and televisions, were reported stolen during the attack.

YEDC noted that such actions disrupt service delivery and pose significant risks to both electrical infrastructure and employee safety. Consequently, operations in Biu have been temporarily suspended.

Citing Section 220(1) of the Electricity Act 2023, YEDC highlighted that assaults on utility personnel and vandalism of power infrastructure are criminal offenses. The company urged customers to direct complaints and grievances through established legal channels, warning that continued violence may lead to a withdrawal of services in affected areas and potential legal action against offenders.

YEDC reaffirmed its commitment to providing safe, reliable, and efficient electricity services and appealed to stakeholders for support in protecting critical power infrastructure and personnel. The company underscored that the safety and wellbeing of its employees remains its top priority.
