YouTube was never designed for films – Nollywood producer, Bolaji Ogunmola

Nollywood Actress Bolaji Ogunmola Discusses Challenges of Filmmaking for YouTube

Nollywood actress and filmmaker Bolaji Ogunmola recently addressed the difficulties associated with producing films for YouTube, a platform she argues was not initially intended for cinematic projects.

In an interview with Jay On-Air, Ogunmola highlighted the significant costs and risks involved in catering to a YouTube audience. She noted that the fees for actors can be prohibitively high, with rates ranging from 4 million to 5 million naira for a four-day shoot, while lower-profile actors may receive between 1 million to 2 million naira.

“The reality is that YouTube was never designed for films. Film is a very expensive art,” Ogunmola stated.

The actress also urged audiences to approach critiques of YouTube filmmakers with a more constructive mindset, adding, “Even the worst film on YouTube costs money to make.”

Ogunmola further remarked on the unique position of Nigeria in this regard, suggesting that it is the only nation producing films specifically for YouTube due to inadequate distribution channels for traditional movie releases.
