Yuletide: Police caution motorists, Okada riders against reckless driving.

Ekiti State Police Express Concern Over Rising Traffic Accidents

The Ekiti State Police Command has raised alarms about a rising trend of road traffic accidents, particularly in Ado-Ekiti, where several recent incidents have resulted in fatalities and serious injuries.

In a statement released by the Public Relations Officer, SP Sunday Abutu, the police noted that many of these accidents are linked to reckless driving behaviors, including excessive speeding, impatience, disobedience to traffic laws, and negligence concerning traffic signals. Such practices pose significant risks to motorists, passengers, pedestrians, and other road users.

With the holiday season approaching, a time characterized by increased vehicular movement and commercial activities, the police are urging all road users—motorists, motorcycle riders, tricycle operators, and pedestrians—to exercise heightened caution and responsibility while traveling.

Commissioner of Police for Ekiti State, CP Falade Adegoroye Michael, emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety over speed, stating, “No journey is worth the loss of a life.” He reminded all road users of their obligation to safeguard themselves and others.

The police command has issued several recommendations to promote road safety. These include adhering to traffic rules and signals, avoiding speeding and reckless overtaking, steering clear of dangerous maneuvers, and refraining from driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Drivers and riders are also reminded to possess valid licenses, ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, avoid overloading and distractions, and use appropriate safety gear, such as seat belts and helmets.

In response to increasing traffic violations, the police are planning to enhance traffic patrols and visibility policing while working in collaboration with traffic management agencies. Any individuals found violating traffic regulations will face legal consequences.

Additionally, the public is encouraged to report traffic violations, emergencies, or public safety threats to the nearest police station or by calling 08062335577.

The Ekiti State Police Command remains dedicated to protecting lives and property and ensuring safer roads for all residents and visitors during the festive season and beyond.
