Zamfara residents protest military withdrawal, block troops’ convoy during exit

Residents of Bindin and surrounding communities in the Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State staged a protest on Wednesday against the reported withdrawal of military personnel from their area. The protests were sparked by recent attacks attributed to bandits in the region.

Thousands of residents, including women wearing hijabs, blocked an army convoy in an effort to prevent the departure of soldiers, emphasizing their reliance on military presence for safety. The demonstrations follow violent attacks allegedly carried out by fighters associated with bandit leader Kachalla Gwaska Dankarami in Bindin and Gobirawar Chali.

Security analyst Bakatsine reported that these attacks have resulted in multiple fatalities among both security personnel and civilians. Additionally, more than 10,000 residents have been displaced, seeking refuge in safer locations due to ongoing violence.

Protestors expressed that the continued presence of soldiers is vital for their security. “We cannot afford to lose the soldiers at this time. Their presence is the only thing giving us some sense of security,” said one resident. Another resident called on authorities to reconsider the decision to withdraw troops, stating, “If the soldiers leave, who will protect us? We are already living in fear after what happened.”

The demonstrators warned that the removal of military personnel could create a security vacuum, potentially allowing bandits to target other communities. The recent spate of attacks has exacerbated fears among residents, leading to further displacement as families flee to what they perceive as safer areas.

Participants in the protest urged the Federal Government and security agencies to maintain a robust military presence in the region and enhance efforts to protect local lives and property. They also called for urgent assistance for those who have been displaced.
