Australia Defeats Turkiye 2-0 in World Cup Opener
Vancouver, Canada — Australia marked a successful start to the FIFA World Cup with a 2-0 victory over Turkiye, who returned to the tournament for the first time in 24 years. Goals from Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe secured the win in their Group D match on Saturday night.
Australian goalkeeper Patrick Beach was pivotal, making eight saves throughout the match as FIFA President Gianni Infantino observed from the stands.
Australia’s coach Tony Popovic made headlines with his surprising lineup decisions, notably starting Beach, who earned only his third cap, in place of experienced captain Maty Ryan. Vice captain Jackson Irvine was also benched for 21-year-old Paul Okon-Engstler, who played an instrumental role in the game.
Despite Turkiye dominating possession, their attempts were thwarted by a well-organized Australian defense. Okon-Engstler set up the opening goal in the first half, delivering a long ball that allowed Irankunda to break free and score.
Turkiye, eager to make a significant impression after reaching the semi-finals in 2002, struggled against Australia’s defensive strategy. One of Turkiye’s best opportunities came in the 27th minute when Real Madrid’s Arda Guler forced a stellar save from Beach.
Just moments later, Australia took the lead. Beach connected with Okon-Engstler, who then sent the ball upfield to Irankunda. The Australian winger expertly maneuvered past defenders before finishing with precision. Irankunda celebrated by mimicking a signature goal celebration from former captain Tim Cahill.
Turkiye nearly equalized three minutes later when Abdulkerim Bardakci’s powerful shot struck the post after Beach managed a slight deflection. Beach continued to excel in the second half, parrying a free kick from Guler that also led to a corner.
Australia secured their victory in the 75th minute when Metcalfe advanced from midfield and scored from 23 meters out.
“It is a dream come true,” said Irankunda, who became the youngest Australian scorer in World Cup history. “It feels amazing. You have to thank the staff and the nation for believing in me.”
This marks Australia’s sixth consecutive World Cup appearance and seventh overall. In their previous tournament, Australia faced France in the opener before bouncing back to defeat Tunisia and Denmark, ultimately reaching the knockout stage.
Turkiye, competing in their third World Cup, now finds themselves in a challenging Group D alongside the United States and Paraguay. The U.S. team triumphed over Paraguay with a score of 4-1 in their group opener on Friday.
