2027: ‘Kwankwaso will be partner, not spare tyre’ – Obi

Obi: Vice President Will Be Active Partner in Governance

ABUJA — Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming 2027 elections, emphasized that the office of the Vice President will be an active collaborator in governance, moving away from a primarily ceremonial role.

Obi made this statement on Saturday during his acceptance as the party’s presidential nominee and while announcing Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate for the election.

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Obi vowed to uphold the rule of law, enhance democratic institutions, and ensure transparency in government operations if elected. He asserted that adherence to the law would be mandatory for both public officials and citizens in alignment with constitutional mandates.

“The rule of law will be fiercely upheld, and adherence to it will be sacrosanct for both government officials and citizens alike,” Obi stated.

Obi also committed to fostering a democratic environment that respects opposition parties and promotes inclusive governance. He highlighted that his administration would focus on governance that reflects the will of the people, free from undue influence by the ruling party.

“Our democracy will exemplify true governance of the people, by the people, and for the people,” he remarked. “We will institutionalize deep respect for opposition parties and encourage constructive engagement in governance.”

Regarding his running mate, Obi affirmed that Kwankwaso would have a significant role within his administration. “I will make democracy work, and the Vice President will be a partner, not a spare tire. I hereby accept my affirmation and nominate Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso as my Vice President,” he said.

Obi expressed optimism that this partnership would help realize his vision for national renewal, improved governance, and economic transformation.
