2027: NDC campaign DG urges Atiku to join Obi-Kwankwaso

Opposition Leaders Urged to Unite Ahead of 2027 Election
Ibrahim Abdulkarim, Director-General of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Presidential Campaign Council, has called on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and other opposition figures to join a coalition supporting Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso for the upcoming 2027 presidential election.
Abdulkarim emphasized the necessity for opposition groups to consolidate their efforts in order to enhance their prospects of unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). In an interview with Arise News, he noted that the coalition is already forming within the NDC, with Obi positioned as the presidential candidate and Kwankwaso agreeing to collaborate.
“The opposition has to come together for us to win,” Abdulkarim stated. “Nobody said the coalition must happen under the ADC; it can occur within the NDC. Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has already set aside his own ambitions.”
He extended an invitation for Atiku and other opposition leaders to join the alliance, arguing that their participation could increase its national appeal. “What we are asking for is for other people to join us, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, so we can expand our reach,” he added.
Abdulkarim responded to criticisms regarding the NDC’s campaign structure, contending that it should not be compared to the Obidient movement and other support groups backing Obi. “How can you compare a party with a support group? We don’t have any problem. They’re all part of the NDC party. We have more than a thousand support groups like that,” he explained.
Regarding concerns about electoral integrity, Abdulkarim urged Nigerians concerned about the validity of their votes to support the NDC, assuring that the party has implemented measures to safeguard votes for the 2027 elections. He reiterated the party’s commitment to running a peaceful campaign nationwide, aiming to engage with voters who have lost trust in the electoral system.
“We will campaign peacefully and reach into every corner,” he stated. Abdulkarim also promised to reassure voters that their ballots will be protected, stating, “I can promise anybody who wants their vote to count that we have a very, very unique and serious program in place.”
