2027: Orji Kalu dismisses ‘weak opposition’, says Tinubu has no competition
Former Abia Governor Predicts Lack of Challenges for President Tinubu in 2027 Election
Abia North Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, the former governor of Abia State, asserted on Wednesday that President Bola Tinubu faces minimal opposition ahead of the 2027 presidential election. Kalu characterized the current political climate as favorable to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the fragmentation of opposition parties.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Kalu indicated that the disunity among opposition groups has strengthened the APC’s ability to secure a second term. “He has no competition. The opposition is very weak. The number of members we had during the primaries and the initiatives Tinubu has implemented across Nigeria bolster our standing,” he stated.
Kalu acknowledged that if opposition parties had maintained unity, the political scenario would likely be more challenging for the ruling party. “If they were together, we would start having some sleepless nights. Now they are not together,” he explained.
Despite his confidence in the APC, Kalu pointed out that the Tinubu administration has not sufficiently showcased its achievements. He noted that the President has shown limited interest in promoting the government’s activities.
The senator also mentioned that Tinubu is facing challenges from internal and external factions. “He has a lot of archenemies working against his administration,” Kalu claimed, while still recognizing what he termed progress during Tinubu’s tenure.
In assessing the administration’s performance, Kalu expressed optimism. “He has done 65 percent well,” he stated, suggesting the President could achieve a rating of “70 percent by September or October.” He further predicted that voters in northern Nigeria would likely support Tinubu’s bid for reelection based on the government’s performance.
Kalu’s remarks emerge amid ongoing political realignments as the nation approaches the 2027 elections. A coalition launched in 2025 under the African Democratic Congress that included key opposition figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso has since faced internal disputes. Differences over the coalition’s leadership and structure have contributed to the current fragmentation of opposition parties.
