Lagos Provides Update on Sanitation Modalities, Warns Defaulters Ahead of April 25

Lagos State Government to Resume Monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise
The Lagos State Government announced the reintroduction of its monthly environmental sanitation exercise, scheduled to commence on Saturday, April 25, 2026. The initiative aims to encourage community participation in maintaining a cleaner environment and will feature controlled movement measures.
In a statement released Wednesday, Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, specified that the exercise will take place on the last Saturday of each month between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. Residents will be permitted to perform thorough cleaning of their homes, surroundings, and drainage frontages during this period.
This announcement follows a symbolic flag-off of the sanitation exercise along the Mushin-Agege Motor Road corridor on March 14, 2026. Wahab emphasized that controlled movement across the state is essential for residents to engage fully in the cleanup efforts.
“The exercise will hold every last Saturday of the month between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. During this period, there will be controlled movement across the state to allow residents to carry out thorough cleaning of their homes, surroundings, and drainage frontages,” Wahab stated.
The Commissioner warned that individuals who fail to comply with the sanitation guidelines will face sanctions under the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017. Monitoring will be conducted by officials from several agencies, including the Ministry of Environment, the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), and local government sanitation inspectors.
Wahab also noted that LAWMA intervention trucks would be available to collect waste generated during the cleanup.
“Our enforcement officers from the ministry, LASEPA, KAI, LAWMA, and local government sanitation inspectors will conduct inspections during and after the sanitation window to ensure compliance. Any defaulters will be sanctioned as per the environmental management law. LAWMA intervention trucks will be deployed to remove bagged waste from the exercise,” Wahab added.
Additionally, to promote community engagement, Wahab announced plans to reward the cleanest Local Government Area, Local Council Development Area, and individual streets throughout the state.
“We aim to foster healthy competition and community participation by recognizing and rewarding cleanliness within our neighborhoods,” he said.
The Lagos State Government urges all residents to participate actively in the environmental sanitation exercise, working together to create a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable environment.
