Bola Tinubu Appoints New Foreign Affairs Minister Amidst Resignation of Predecessor

LAGOS — President Bola Tinubu has appointed Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu as Nigeria’s new Minister of Foreign Affairs, following the resignation of Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, who stepped down to pursue a candidacy in the 2027 elections.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu previously held the position of Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In a statement issued by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the President also nominated Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye for the role of Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, pending Senate confirmation. Enikanolaiye, who hails from Kogi State, was serving as Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and International Relations until his nomination.

The statement highlighted Enikanolaiye’s extensive experience, noting that he is a distinguished diplomat with over three decades in Nigeria’s foreign service. He has previously held the position of Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and has served in key diplomatic roles in Addis Ababa, Belgrade, Ottawa, London, and New Delhi.

President Tinubu emphasized that these appointments are part of ongoing initiatives aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s foreign policy framework for improved efficiency, strategic engagement, and strengthened global partnerships.

“The President congratulates the appointees and urges them to work diligently to promote Nigeria’s national interest, advance economic diplomacy, foster regional stability, and safeguard the welfare of Nigerians at home and abroad,” the statement read.
