‘What can Nigerians do With N70k’ — Fayose tackles Reno Omokri over defence of fuel price hike

Businessman Critiques Ambassador-Designate Over Fuel Price Comparison
Isaac Fayose, a prominent Nigerian businessman, has criticized Reno Omokri, Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Mexico, for his recent comments regarding fuel prices in Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Omokri highlighted the disparity in petrol costs between the two nations, stating, “Petrol is now N3,200 per litre in England, almost three times what we pay in Nigeria. Price increases are a global issue caused by the Middle East crisis.”
Omokri’s remarks drew backlash from various Nigerians on social media, prompting Fayose to respond. He questioned whether Omokri had considered the differences in minimum wage between the UK and Nigeria before making his statement.
Fayose pointed out that Nigeria’s minimum wage stands at N70,000 per month, which he calculated would only allow for the purchase of 48 liters of fuel if priced at N1,400 per litre. He noted that this amount does not account for other living expenses.
In contrast, Fayose indicated that the UK minimum wage exceeds £12 per hour, leading to an annual income of approximately £25,000—equivalent to around 50 million naira. He emphasized the stark difference, asserting that Nigeria’s minimum wage of N70,000 per year is significantly lower.
Fayose concluded his response with a critique of Omokri’s perspective, questioning the rationale behind his comments. The exchange highlights ongoing tensions regarding economic disparities and cost of living issues in Nigeria.
