Nigeria Customs parades officer over viral Lagos–Benin Road extortion allegation

Nigeria Customs Service Investigates Officer Following Viral Extortion Allegation
LAGOS — The Nigeria Customs Service has taken disciplinary action against one of its officers after a video circulated online, alleging extortion on the Lagos-Benin Expressway.
The three-minute video, recorded by a motorist using Meta smart glasses, shows Customs officers stopping the driver and reportedly demanding a payment of 200,000 naira. The motorist asserted that all his documents were in order, but claimed the officers would not let him continue until he made a bank transfer to cover alleged duty shortfalls.
In response to the incident, the Nigeria Customs Service activated its zero-tolerance policy against misconduct. On behalf of the Controller of the Federal Operations Unit (FOU) ‘A’, CSC Hussaini Abdullahi stated that any officer found to have violated ethical standards would face appropriate sanctions.
He also noted that the officer has been handed over to the head of the Customs Police Unit in Zone A for a comprehensive investigation.
AC Funere William Ebi, the Assistant Provost Marshal, confirmed the transfer of the officer and assured that a thorough investigation will be conducted in line with the unit’s mandate.
