How Uzodimma survived palace coup

Uzodimma Survives Attempted Ouster as PGF Chairman
By Uzo Isaiah
In a remarkable turn of events, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma retained his position as Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) following an attempted coup last week. Initial reports suggested that a group of governors convened in Abuja and replaced Uzodimma with Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, but actual evidence of this meeting was conspicuously absent.
As the news broke early Friday, many sought confirmation of the alleged coup but found no official communication, photographs, or video evidence to substantiate the claims. The situation appeared dubious from the start; even the PGF’s Director General, Folorusho Aluko, stated he was unaware of the meeting. Not one of the purported participants, including Mbah, publicly acknowledged their involvement.
This skepticism continued as questions arose regarding the rationale behind Uzodimma’s potential removal, particularly after he had led several governors in submitting a nomination form for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu just hours earlier. Observers noted that if a change was warranted, it was curious that Mbah, a newcomer to the party, would be considered over Uzodimma’s deputy, Uba Sani.
The attempted coup swiftly unraveled, as over 23 governors quickly gathered at the Imo State Governor’s Lodge to express their support for Uzodimma. Following a closed-door meeting, they passed a vote of confidence in him and publicly reaffirmed his leadership during a press briefing.
Kebbi State Governor Dr. Nasir Idris, who moved the motion for support, emphasized the unity of the PGF and reaffirmed Uzodimma’s leadership role. Uba Sani of Kaduna State, who seconded the motion, echoed this sentiment.
Interestingly, the governors remained undeterred by the rumors and proceeded to voice their unwavering support for President Tinubu’s reelection.
The rapid mobilization of support for Uzodimma reflects confidence in his leadership and suggests a cohesive alliance among the governors.
Speculations surrounding the motives behind the coup attempt vary, with some suggesting that Uzodimma’s increasing influence posed a threat to certain factions within the party. Others speculate that the plotters aim to undermine Tinubu’s administration and view Uzodimma as an obstacle to achieving their objectives.
This episode signals a potential rift within the All Progressives Congress (APC), highlighting the emergence of internal dissidents who may not support Tinubu’s agenda. In light of recent events, it may be prudent for both the President and Governor Uzodimma to reassess their inner circles, as loyalty can sometimes mask hidden agendas.
The lessons from this incident echo the adage: “Once bitten, twice shy.”
