Mararaba residents, other road users groan as gridlock worsens
Traffic Gridlock Plagues Mararaba Residents and Commuters
Mararaba, a suburb of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), is grappling with significant traffic congestion that is impacting residents and other road users. The area is known for its high population density, housing numerous civil servants and business owners who have opted for its more affordable accommodation.
As a vital transit point for commuters traveling from southern Nigeria to Abuja, Mararaba is characterized by its busy roadways. Reports indicate that traffic congestion can extend up to 11 kilometers from Abuja during peak hours.
Recent road construction projects have exacerbated the situation, particularly the demolition of the Mararaba Bridge and the ongoing construction of a twin flyover along the Abuja-Keffi Expressway. The bridge was dismantled several months ago to facilitate the new overhead infrastructure, leaving commuters heading toward both the Keffi and FCT routes in a challenging predicament.
Commuters have voiced their frustrations. Many have noted that the narrowing of the road due to construction equipment has forced traffic into a frustratingly slow crawl, with few alternative routes available. One driver, stuck in traffic for over an hour, described the experience as “frustrating,” highlighting a complete halt in movement just past the Sani Abacha Bus Terminal.
Sunny, another commuter, pointed out the lack of adequate traffic management, stating, “Only a few traffic officers have been visible, leaving drivers to navigate the chaotic stretch on their own.” He expressed concerns about the poor lighting in some areas, which raises safety issues for drivers.
Nkechi Ikechukwu shared that she has adjusted her morning routine to accommodate the congestion, waking up at 4 a.m. instead of her usual 5 a.m. to avoid the traffic. She remarked on the notorious gridlock in the mornings and evenings, essential commuting times for many Abuja workers.
Abdul Mustapha, another resident, urged authorities to enhance coordination with construction firms, provide timely updates, and deploy more personnel to manage traffic effectively during roadwork. “It’s quite tiring to leave work only to face heavy traffic,” he added, emphasizing the need for quicker completion of the construction projects to ease the burden on motorists and commuters alike.
