Court docks Gabam for alleged misappropriation as SDP chairman reacts

Former SDP Chairman Faces Fraud Charges in Wuse Magistrate Court
The Magistrate Court in Wuse Zone 2, Federal Capital Territory, has formally charged Shehu Gabam, the former Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), with financial misappropriation and related offenses. The charges were brought to court on Tuesday.
Gabam, along with Chukwuma Uchechukwu, is facing six counts of financial misappropriation, involving over 35 million naira, as well as charges of forgery and breach of trust. The case, identified as DCC/10/2026, is currently under the jurisdiction of the FCT Chief Magistrate Court.
During the proceedings, presiding Magistrate Amauche Onyedium recorded Gabam’s plea of not guilty. Following this, the court set bail for Gabam at 3 million naira, requiring him to provide two sureties based in Abuja.
Sodiq Abubakar, the current Chairman of SDP, stated that the party is pursuing legal action against Gabam to rid the organization of external influences. “We are confident that the judiciary will deliver justice for our millions of members,” Abubakar said. He added that the party had previously requested the Independent National Electoral Commission to take action against Gabam but saw no results, prompting the decision to bring the matter before the courts.
Abubakar accused Gabam of mishandling party funds during his tenure from 2022 to 2023. He was elected as chairman of the SDP during a national convention in Bauchi on May 9, 2026.
This incident follows a recent disturbance at the SDP national secretariat, where individuals suspected to be loyal to Gabam were reported to have damaged the facility’s gate.
